How to Publish a Front Page 2003 Web Site to Your Hard Drive

AND...How to Open Your Front Page Web Site "Live" in Front Page

Open Front Page.

Click on "File", then on "New".

In the resulting dialog box on the right, under "New Web Site", click on "One Page Web Site..." This will result in a pop up box entitled "Web Site Templates", where you should see "One Page Site" highlighted as default.

On the right side of this box you'll see a place to specify the location of the new site.

Set your cursor in the box, then, using the "end" key on your keyboard, go to the end of the text and backspace to the first "\".

Now type in a name for the new site. Click "OK" at the bottom of the box.

Make a note of the name you just gave the new site.

Now go back to the main front page window. Open the "Index" or "Default" file of the site. Click on "File", then on "Publish Site"

You will now be looking at a new pop-up window entitled "Remote Web Site Properties"

There are four radio buttons in the top half of that window. Click on the bottom one entitled "File System", which tells front page to use a folder on your computer as the remote web site.

In the box entitled "Remote Web Site Location" enter the url of your site on the internet... http://www.yoursite.com

Click "OK". You should now be prompted for a password. Enter your username and password that you would use to publish your site. Click on "OK".

Pay attention here:

Make sure you check at the top of the resulting windows, which should be showing you two web site folder views. The one on the left will be the new site you just created on your hard drive and above it should say "Local Web Site"

The window on the right should show you all the files on the server...the active web site. Above that window should be the words "Remote Web Site".

At the bottom right are three radio buttons. They are entitled, from top to bottom, "Local to remote", "Remote to Local", "Synchronize". Make sure the one that is entitled "Remote to local" is the one that is highlighted.

Click on "Publish Web Site".

This should begin the download of your site from the internet to your hard drive.

When the download is completed, close the site and you can then go into "My Documents" and "My Web Sites" and re-name your site.

The next time you want to publish the site to the server, you should pay close attention to what boxes and radio buttons are highlighted to make sure you don't slip up.
