Increase Web Site Traffic

Keyword Tags & Density

When working on your home page, remember that search engines start at the top of the page, and some search engines only crawl your home page, so you need to pick the right keywords and key phrases.

Keyword meta tags should be kept between 874 and 1000 characters.

Consider using the a wide variety of keywords and phrases on your home page while remembering to stay within the character limitations previously stated herein.

What is keyword density? Keyword density refers to the number of times a keyword is used vs the total word count of the page. Overdoing it can be viewed as spam by a search engine. Pages with the proper ratio are likely to get higher search engine ranking.

Title Meta Tag

The title meta tag comes right after the head tag and this is where a search engine will begin to search your web site's content.

Be sure to choose a title that describes your site content, and be sure the title contains your chosen keywords and key phrases.  "Home", or "My Home Page" will not get your site where you want it to be.  Go to a search engine and do a search for those terms.  You'll be amazed at the results!

The title meta tag should be no more than 60 characters.

Description Meta Tag

Different search engines apply different rules to description meta tags, so you should keep these tags between 150 to 250 characters.

"Stop Words"?

"Stop Words" are words such as "the", "to", "and", "be", prepositions & articles that usually can be found in just about any sentence or paragraph, but have very little, if any, meaning by themselves. The search engines save time by passing over these words, so if you use them in your key phrases, you're wasting available title character space.

Spelling! Spelling! Spelling!

Poor spelling may well be the number one culprit in poor search engine placement. Search engines can't tell what the misspelled word may have been, nor can they correct it, so you've just missed out on a possible placement opportunity. After all the work you've done to build a great web site, you can't afford to skip this step!

Alt Text

Alt Text for your images is a must! Alt tags provide alternative text for the visually impaired, as well as telling a viewer who has his computer set to "no graphics" what the missing graphic is.

If you've read this far into the page, you can now understand how much goes into the building of a web site. Most areas of the "behind the scene" code are critical to how the page looks, acts, and is responded to by search engines. If you don't feel ready for the challenge, Picture This IS ready!
